In the quiet villages nestled amidst the stunning hills of Mbinga, the Lundu community once faced critical challenges: a lack of clean water and inadequate sanitation. Now days, however, Lundu’s story has transformed, and a light of hope now shines brightly. This is a testament to the power of community, collaboration, and shared determination to create change.
The Lundu project was successfully implemented through a partnership between Sanitation and Water Action (SAWA), the Lundu Parish, and the international organization Water Engineers for the Americas & Africa (WEFTA). Since its inception in 2009, SAWA has led projects across more than 12 regions in Tanzania, championing development through access to clean water and improved sanitation. Guided by professionalism and robust management, this project was completed three months ahead of schedule, reflecting the unwavering dedication of all involved.
With a budget of TZS 500 million, the project has enabled access to clean water for over 2,500 individuals, including schools, a health center, and staff residences. New water collection points, modern pipelines, and a 20,000-liter elevated storage tank were constructed, while sanitation and wastewater systems were significantly enhanced across all key facilities.
The Lundu project has achieved far more than providing clean water; it has improved health and education standards. Renovated toilets, laundry facilities, and handwashing stations have created much-needed sanitary conditions in the community’s schools and health center. The results speak volumes:
- 4.2 kilometers of pipelines connect the water source to the main tank.
- 2 kilometers of distribution pipes supply water to beneficiaries.
- 15 water collection points were constructed, six of which directly serve the community.
These aren’t just technical achievements; they are significant steps toward enhancing everyday life. Children can now attend school without worrying about fetching water, patients are treated in hygienic conditions, and families have newfound peace of mind with reliable access to clean water.
Every drop of water now flowing in Lundu tells a story of hope. It is the story of Ms. Veronica Benard Bakari, the headmistress of Lundu Primary School, who spearheaded efforts to supply construction materials and mobilized students as a force for change. It is the story of children coming together to preserve infrastructure, armed with dreams of a better future. It is the story of the Bishop of Mbinga Diocese, who spared no effort to ensure the project’s success, reducing costs and maximizing impact.
The Lundu community now has every reason to smile. Parents are relieved to see their children studying in safe environments. Priests and sisters have dignified living spaces, and residents witness tangible progress in their daily lives. This project is not merely about infrastructure; it’s about transforming lives.
The Lundu project exemplifies what we can achieve when we work together. Yet, these successes require continued effort. It is the responsibility of the community to maintain the infrastructure, ensure affordable water payments, and prevent unauthorized connections. These measures are crucial to sustaining the project’s benefits and ensuring future generations enjoy its fruits.
To everyone inspired by Lundu’s story, we invite you to join us in supporting similar initiatives. Together, we can make every corner of Tanzania greener, cleaner, and healthier. Lundu has shown us that it is possible.
